We have a bunch of news this week including how Marvel Rivals was made on UE5, a 2D Mario game was reimagined as 3D, and Unreal’s attempt at fixing shader stutter.
Marvel Rivals is the biggest game of last year by player count and took over the multiplayer community. It was made on UE5 leveraging a lot of Unreal’s features like Lumen and Chaos physics. Including Fortnite, now two of the biggest live service games are made on Unreal proving its use as a versatile engine for competitive multiplayer shooters.
In this interview of the developer team by Epic Games, you can see a behind the scenes of the how the game was made including why they chose UE5 over UE4 and how Doctor Strange’s iconic portal was created.
Bobby Ivar reimagined what Super Mario World would look like in 3D in this video. He made a unique style that blends the original 2D pixel art with the updated graphics of Unreal Engine 5. Also the video is a really high quality compared to other “remake” type YouTube videos.
If you follow the conversation around Unreal you have probably heard of shader stuttering. It has been the main complaint by gamers and is noticeable in some Unreal titles. It is when the game freezes for a brief moment to compile shaders, which allows materials to be rendered, for a user’s specific GPU and drivers.
In this stream Epic showcases the work they have done to greatly decrease shader stuttering with PSO Caches. As of UE5.5 shader stuttering has largely been eliminated. You may see some people still complain about Unreal and that is because currently released UE5 titles are made with older versions of the engine.
That is all for this week stay tune for next time!
